Finding the Middle Through the Extremes

The human mind naturally divides the world into opposites: hot and cold, comfort and discomfort, good and bad, rest and effort, this or that. We’re constantly sorting our experiences into categories, chasing after what feels good and running away from what doesn’t. We spend a huge amount of energy of resisting one thing while seeking another and we miss out on the biggest prize of all, just being present to enjoy each moment of life.

Contrast therapy invites us into a different relationship with those opposites. Instead of choosing one over the other, we intentionally experience both. We sweat in very hot heat, then willingly immerse ourselves in cold water. Then we do it again and again.

When we do this, the body takes over for the mind. We stop clinging to one experience and resisting the next, and begin to appreciate the rhythm and relationship between the two extremes and how each gives meaning to the other.

Contrast therapy is a great metaphor for life’s natural rhythms. We ebb and flow between activity and rest, challenge and ease, solitude and community, joy and grief. We inhale and exhale. Day becomes night. The seasons continually transform. Rhythm equals time and being in sync with life’s natural rhythm equals timelessness, the end of time. Trust us, it’s deep! Contrast therapy is a practice for consciously particpating in life’s natural rhythms, and it has many benefits!

When we leave the bathhouse, we notice that we’ve become more spacious inside and more present. It’s as though visiting two extremes creates a much larger middle for us to live in.

A Tradition That Spans Centuries

Alternating between heat and cold isn’t a modern wellness trend. It’s a practice that has been woven into bathing cultures around the world for centuries.

From Finnish saunas and Russian banyas to Nordic winter plunges and other traditional bathhouses, people have long paired intense heat with invigorating cold as a way to restore body and mind, gather in community, and mark the transition from the demands of everyday life into a space of fun and relaxation.

Today, researchers continue to explore the effects of contrast therapy on circulation, recovery, mood, stress resilience, and overall well-being. While the science is still evolving, one thing has remained remarkably consistent across cultures and generations: people simply feel wonderful after doing it.

How to Experience Contrast Therapy at Ceremony

At Ceremony, contrast therapy is simple and effective.

Spend 10–15 minutes relaxing in the warmth one of our traditional Finnish-style dry saunas, then cool off with 1–2 minutes in one of our cold plunges. Relax for a few minutes, enjoy a cup of tea, stretch, or settle into one of our indoor or outdoor lounge spaces before beginning another round.

Our favorite routine is three rounds of sauna and cold plunge, but there’s no right way to experience the bathhouse. Listen to your body, move at your own pace, and discover the rhythm that feels best for you.

Whether you’re looking to unwind after a demanding week, challenge yourself in a supportive environment, or just experience one of the world’s oldest wellness traditions, contrast therapy offers a practice that is both deeply restorative and surprisingly joyful.

Complete the Experience

Many guests choose to pair their bathhouse visit with one of our treatments, allowing each experience to build upon the next.

A massage after several rounds of contrast therapy can feel incredibly restorative, while one of our signature Korean-inspired body scrubs leaves your skin refreshed and your whole body renewed.

For the ultimate Ceremony experience, our Ceremony Package combines the bathhouse, massage, and body scrub into one thoughtfully designed visit. Individually, each experience is wonderful. Together, they’re something entirely their own.
